The complaints about RCV are expected and wrong-headed. A majority of Alaska voters did not put Sarah Palin in their top two choices. That is what this system is meant to do--keep a candidate whom a minority of the electorate likes from being elected. As for the Democrats in Nevada, their response is typical of the status quo trying to maintain an entrenched, undemocratic advantage. If the state is more than 50% conservative, then it should elect a conservative candidate and not have that thwarted by the number of candidates splitting the vote on the conservative side.
Since the race is being re-run, it sure would be interesting to know if Begich would have gotten to 50% if he had beaten Palin in 1st choice votes. It is certainly wrong to draw conclusions about an entire voting system from one very quirky election, where Democrats got their act together by having only one candidate but Republicans did not. And of course Palin is a unique lightning rod.
Arghh, you’ve done it again. Mary Peltola’s name is not that difficult to spell properly. It’s only fair to recognize her correctly after she defeated Palyn.
